Damage on Tonga Remains Unknown After Eruption

The tsunami threat around the Pacific Ocean from a huge undersea volcanic eruption is receding, but the extent of the damage on the tiny island nation of Tonga remains unknown.

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said Sunday afternoon that New Zealand and Australia are ready to send aid to Tonga, but need to establish what assistance and supplies are needed.

A Royal New Zealand Air Force plane left for Tonga Monday morning to begin assessing the damage, which it was unable to do earlier due to the ash cloud.

Satellite images showed the eruption Saturday evening, with ash, steam and gas rising like a mushroom above the Pacific. A sonic boom could be heard as far away as Alaska.

On Tonga, which is home to about 105,000 people, it sent tsunami waves crashing across the shore and people rushing to higher ground.

The eruption cut the internet to Tonga, and communication to the island nation could be limited for several days.

Ardern said there had not yet been any official reports of injuries or deaths on Tonga, but warned that authorities hadn't yet made contact with some coastal areas and smaller islands.

She said there had been major damage to boats and shops along the Tongan coastline. The capital, Nuku'alofa, was covered in a thick layer of volcanic dust, Ardern said, contaminating water supplies and making fresh water a vital need.

The tsunami waves damaged boats as far away as New Zealand and California, but did not appear to cause any widespread damage.

Tsunami warnings were earlier issued for Japan, Hawaii, Alaska and the US Pacific coast. Dave Snider, of the National Tsunami Warning Center in Palmer, Alaska, said it was very unusual for a volcanic eruption to affect an entire ocean basin, and called it both "humbling and scary."

The explosion of the Hunga Tonga Hunga Ha'apai volcano, about 64 kilometers north of Nuku'alofa, was the latest in a series of eruptions. In late 2014 and early 2015, eruptions created a small new island and disrupted international air travel in the Pacific for several days.
