Chimpanzees Observed Using Insects to Treat Wounds

While humans might reach for a bandage if they get hurt, chimpanzees seem to have a different type of medication: rubbing insects into a wound. And interestingly, they not only use this method on themselves, but also to treat the wounds of other chimpanzees.

Researchers at the Loango National Park in Gabon began observing this behavior in 2019, after a chimpanzee named Suzee was filmed inspecting a wound on the foot of her son, Sia. She was seen catching an insect and placing it in her mouth, before rubbing it into Sia's wound.

Surprised by this behavior, which had never been observed before, researchers with the Ozouga Chimpanzee Project decided to study it further.

From November 2019 to February 2021, they observed this type of medicating in 76 wounds and 22 different chimpanzees.

Self-medicating has been seen in other animals, such as elephants, bears and bees. But this research, published in Current Biology, shows the first instance of animals using insects on wounds as a type of medication.

"Chimpanzees eat insects but we did not know that they catch and use them to treat their wounds," said Simone Pika, the study's co-author.

The researchers are not sure what insect is being used, but they think it could be a flying insect because of the chimpanzees' quick movement to catch it.

And while they do not yet know what effect this insect has on wounds, they believe it may provide pain relief.

The researchers also said that in treating each other's wounds, the chimpanzees are exhibiting prosocial behavior — actions that are performed for the benefit of somebody else.

Pika said that many people doubt whether animals are able to exhibit this type of behavior. But she told The Guardian that the chimpanzees have nothing to gain from this.

이전에는 한번도 관찰되지 않은 이러한 행동에 놀란 연구진들은 Ozouga Chimpanzee Project와 함께 더 연구해보기로 결정했다.

2019년 11월부터 2021년 2월까지 연구진들은 이 치료를 적용한 22마리의 다른 침팬치들과 76개의 상처를 관찰했다.

자가치료는 코끼리나 곰, 벌과 같은 다른 동물들에게서도 보여져왔다. 그러나 Current Biology에 발간된 이 조사에서는 치료의 목적으로 벌레를 상처에 사용한 동물의 첫 번째 사례로 소개되었다.

“침팬치가 벌레를 잡아 먹는 다는 것은 알았지만 그들의 상처 치유에 사용한다는 사실은 몰랐습니다”라고 이번 연구의 공동 저자 Simone Pika가 말했다.

연구진들은 어떤 벌레를 사용하는지는 확실히 알지 못했지만 침팬치들의 벌레를 잡는 빠른 동작으로 보았을 때 그것이 날아다니는 벌레일 것이라고 생각했다.

그리고 이 벌레들이 상처에 어떤 효과가 있는지는 아직 알지 못하지만 통증완화 작용을 할 것이라고 생각한다.

또한 연구진들은 침팬치들이 서로의 상처를 치료해주는 것에서 친사회적 행동(다른이의 이익을 위해 행동하는 것)을 보여주는 것이라고 말했다.

많은 사람들은 동물들이 이러한 유형의 행동을 보일 수 있는지 의심을 가진다고 Pika는 말했다. 그러나 그녀는 이러한 행동으로인해 침팬치가 얻는 것은 아무것도 없다고 The Guardian에서 말했다.
